About Inlays and Onlays

Classified between a dental filling and a crown, a dental inlay or onlay can restore a damaged or decayed tooth. Used on molars and pre-molars, a dental inlay covers the indented center of a tooth while an onlay covers the tooth's rounded, upper edges. Like dental fillings and crowns, inlays and onlays can be made from a variety of materials — composite resin, metal, and porcelain. Dr. Ellen Katz and Dr. Bridget Glazarov can help New York, NY patients understand fillings, crowns, inlays, and onlays so they can make the right decision about how to treat their tooth at Maison BE.

Am I A Candidate For Inlays and Onlays?

An onlay or inlay is a good choice when you've got a damaged tooth or a large cavity that is too big to get filled, but does not require the full coverage of a crown. At your dental exam, Dr. Ellen Katz may examine your digital x-rays to determine the ideal method for your tooth. If an onlay or inlay is selected, she will discuss the available materials that will best meet your requirements. You may even discuss whether you would like a direct restoration (an inlay or onlay made at our office with CEREC technology while you wait) versus an indirect restoration created at a dental laboratory.

An exceptional dental experience like none other. From the moment I walked in the door until I left, I was treated like gold. The staff is warm and inviting. My hygienist, Jade was personable and put me at ease during my new patient experience. Dr. Ellen helped me create a plan of care based on my goals and what's best best for my oral health. The office is fabulous and it's a boutique experience I cannot recommend enough. This dental studio is like none other and I am so pleased to be a new patient at such a wonderful and caring dental studio. They have added touches and options that set them apart from all others and they have raised the bar on what an amazing patient experience is supposed to feel like. I speak confidently and with experience writing this review as I'm a nurse and they know what it means to make it all about the patient. They have thought of everything and then things that make sense that no other dental office has offered during an office visit. My under eye patches were soothing and my favorite part! I truly feel that everyone has my best interest at heart and insures I feel like a VIP while at Maison Be. They sent me home with a beautiful bag of goodies which made my day. I cannot wait to wear my new sweatshirt and feel apart of the Maison Be family as I am proud to represent such an exceptional dental studio. This women owned business has knocked it out of the park!!!!! I am pleased to support these women as they build a brand unlike none other. Thank you everyone who made my first experience one that I will not forget. I can't wait to go back and who says that about the dentist?! Fabulous and fun!!

Have been looking for a new dentist since i moved to the city and after some research and a TikTok post(haha) i decided to try out Maison Be. To start off the appointment making process was so smooth for a new patient, didn't have to call just made an appointment online; the front desk staff is very very organized, so welcoming and kind, very short wait and even offered me a beverage while i waited. The hygienist(completely forgot her name but i believe it starts with a J) and Dr (Ellen Katz) were both so sweet and personable. They both made me feel so comfortable with the amenities provided AND checked in with me while they were checking and cleaning my teeth. I really appreciate the service and visit I received because as a person of color I feel a lot of offices aren't as welcoming and genuine about the care they give me. So glad I found my new dentist! Thank you so much!!!

The doctor has the most personable approach, remembering me every time. Had my first ever filling (I was nervous) and they made me so comfortable. It also was super quick and efficient. As a former dentist hater/avoider, they have truly turned my views on the dentist around.

Dr. Ellen is the best. She had a comprehensive understanding of what I needed to get taken care of and she provided a plan that would work effectively to ensure I get the results I want. She was extremely attentive and performed every procedure smoothly with great results and zero pain! I recommend her for all dental needs and trust her to do what’s best for the patient because of her vast experience and academic knowledge. The experience at the office was 5 stars, it’s a beautiful place and felt like I was at a luxury spa!

How Do Inlays and Onlays Work?

An onlay or inlay is a fantastic option if you have a cracked tooth or a large cavity that's too big to get filled but does not need the complete protection of a crown. During your exam, your dentist will examine your digital x-rays to determine the best method for your tooth. After applying anesthesia to numb the treatment area, Dr. Ellen or Dr. Bridget will start by cleaning out areas of decay. As soon as the restoration is ready, your dentist will carefully set and then bond it on your tooth, followed by polishing borders and adjusting the fit so your tooth is properly coated and feels right. If only local anesthesia was used, you can leave after the procedure and get back to your normal day. You might feel some discomfort or sensitivity for a few days once your onlay or inlay is placed. Your onlay or inlay should be taken care of just like your own teeth with daily brushing and flossing.

Customized Cavity Treatments

If you have a decayed or damaged tooth, it's important to treat the issue before it turns into a painful and expensive problem. Dental inlays and onlays are an alternative to fillings that will be recommended based on your needs. To find out more about inlays, onlays, and other dental restoration options to renew your oral health, schedule a consultation at Maison BE in New York, NY.

About Us
Are inlays and onlays better than fillings?
Inlays and onlays are best for patients with cavities that are too large for fillings. One isn't necessarily better than the other. The deciding factor will be your unique needs and dental conditions. Dr. Katz or Dr. Glazarov may recommend either inlays and onlays or fillings after a comprehensive dental exam at our office.
Can a dental onlay fall off?

In some cases, a temporary dental onlay may be able to fall off of the tooth. This usually happens when the patient is eating sticky foods or chewing gum, which pulls at the only and causes it to come off. By avoiding these types of foods, you can reduce the risk of losing your temporary onlay.

How much do inlays and onlays cost?

The total cost of inlays and/or onlays will vary from patient to patient depending on a wide variety of factors. During your consultation, our staff will listen to your concerns and analyze your oral health to create a custom treatment plan. At that point, we’ll be able to provide a more accurate cost estimate for your treatment.

How should I clean my teeth after getting inlays and onlays?
Inlays and onlays should be cleaned the same as regular teeth. Cleaning the inlays and onlays is crucial to the lasting results of your treatment. After your treatment, Maison BE patients should brush their teeth using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste two times a day. Individuals should not use their teeth as tools, as this may damage the inlays and onlays.
How long do inlays and onlays last?
With proper dental maintenance and regular professional cleanings, inlays and onlays usually last for about 10 – 15 years. This makes them a great long-term option for patients with damaged teeth who desire something stronger and/or larger than a filling.
