What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal (gum) disease is a condition of inflammation in the gums, which may result in critical damage to your mouth. There are several stages of gum disease, ranging from mild to severe. The first stage is gingivitis, which is brought on by a plaque buildup in the gum pockets. Without treatment, gingivitis can develop into the next stage called periodontitis, which impacts the fibers and bone that support your tooth roots. Advanced periodontitis is the final phase of periodontal disease, which can cause teeth to become loose or fall out. Maison BE provides both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options to address gum disease. Contact our office in New York, NY to schedule an examination with Dr. Ellen Katz or Dr. Bridget Glazarov.

How Is Gum Disease Treated?

Treatment for periodontal disease will be determined by the seriousness of the infection. For cases caught early, scaling and root planing (SRP) is usually done to clean out your gum pockets. In more serious cases, antibiotics may be prescribed in addition to multiple scaling and root planing treatments. Severe cases of periodontal disease will generally need a surgical procedure, such as pocket reduction or gum grafting. Based upon the stage of gum disease and your treatment plan, your recovery time could vary. You might need to schedule multiple appointments at Maison BE to completely address your gum disorder. After your oral health has been restored, you should continue to have routine dental exams and cleanings at Maison BE.

An exceptional dental experience like none other. From the moment I walked in the door until I left, I was treated like gold. The staff is warm and inviting. My hygienist, Jade was personable and put me at ease during my new patient experience. Dr. Ellen helped me create a plan of care based on my goals and what's best best for my oral health. The office is fabulous and it's a boutique experience I cannot recommend enough. This dental studio is like none other and I am so pleased to be a new patient at such a wonderful and caring dental studio. They have added touches and options that set them apart from all others and they have raised the bar on what an amazing patient experience is supposed to feel like. I speak confidently and with experience writing this review as I'm a nurse and they know what it means to make it all about the patient. They have thought of everything and then things that make sense that no other dental office has offered during an office visit. My under eye patches were soothing and my favorite part! I truly feel that everyone has my best interest at heart and insures I feel like a VIP while at Maison Be. They sent me home with a beautiful bag of goodies which made my day. I cannot wait to wear my new sweatshirt and feel apart of the Maison Be family as I am proud to represent such an exceptional dental studio. This women owned business has knocked it out of the park!!!!! I am pleased to support these women as they build a brand unlike none other. Thank you everyone who made my first experience one that I will not forget. I can't wait to go back and who says that about the dentist?! Fabulous and fun!!

Have been looking for a new dentist since i moved to the city and after some research and a TikTok post(haha) i decided to try out Maison Be. To start off the appointment making process was so smooth for a new patient, didn't have to call just made an appointment online; the front desk staff is very very organized, so welcoming and kind, very short wait and even offered me a beverage while i waited. The hygienist(completely forgot her name but i believe it starts with a J) and Dr (Ellen Katz) were both so sweet and personable. They both made me feel so comfortable with the amenities provided AND checked in with me while they were checking and cleaning my teeth. I really appreciate the service and visit I received because as a person of color I feel a lot of offices aren't as welcoming and genuine about the care they give me. So glad I found my new dentist! Thank you so much!!!

The doctor has the most personable approach, remembering me every time. Had my first ever filling (I was nervous) and they made me so comfortable. It also was super quick and efficient. As a former dentist hater/avoider, they have truly turned my views on the dentist around.

Dr. Ellen is the best. She had a comprehensive understanding of what I needed to get taken care of and she provided a plan that would work effectively to ensure I get the results I want. She was extremely attentive and performed every procedure smoothly with great results and zero pain! I recommend her for all dental needs and trust her to do what’s best for the patient because of her vast experience and academic knowledge. The experience at the office was 5 stars, it’s a beautiful place and felt like I was at a luxury spa!

About Us
What are the early signs of periodontal disease I should watch for?

Early signs of periodontal disease include red, swollen, or tender gums that may bleed when you brush or floss. You might also notice that your gums are receding, making your teeth look longer than normal. Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth can also be indicators. Loose teeth and changes in the way your teeth fit together when you bite are further signs that should prompt a visit to your dentist. Early detection and treatment are crucial to managing periodontal disease effectively.

Can periodontal disease affect my overall health?

Periodontal disease is not just a dental issue; it has been linked to more serious systemic health problems. Studies suggest a relationship between periodontal disease and cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and stroke. The bacteria from inflamed gums can enter the bloodstream and contribute to disease in other parts of the body. Managing gum disease can therefore be an important factor in overall health and well-being.

Is periodontal disease linked to other conditions like diabetes or heart disease?

Periodontal disease and diabetes are interconnected, with each condition potentially exacerbating the other. For diabetic patients, managing blood sugar is essential as high sugar levels increase the risk of periodontal infections. Conversely, effective gum disease treatment can help improve diabetes control. There is also evidence suggesting that periodontal disease can increase the risk of heart disease due to inflammation that affects the arteries. Regular dental check-ups and good oral hygiene can mitigate these risks.

How often should I visit Maison BE Dental Studio for periodontal check-ups?

The frequency of your visits to Maison BE Dental Studio for periodontal check-ups depends on the severity of your condition and the treatment plan advised by your dentist. Generally, patients with periodontal disease might need to visit every 3-6 months. These regular visits allow the dentist to monitor the disease and adjust treatment as necessary. They also provide an opportunity for professional cleaning to remove plaque and tartar that can contribute to gum disease.
